School History

Original School
From 1864 - 1920, a small Lutheran school for Grades 1 - 8 was housed in St. Paul Lutheran Church on Wayne Avenue in Dayton and was called St. Paul Lutheran School.

August 31, 1988

  • The school reopened on August 31, 1988 as The Lutheran School of Dayton. Nineteen students were registered for Kindergarten and Grade 1.
  • St. Paul Lutheran Church established the school as an independent, not-for-profit corporation [501(c)(3)] approved by the state of Ohio.

First Corporate Members

  • In 1990 Faith Lutheran Church, Dayton, First Lutheran Church, Dayton and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Kettering joined St. Paul Lutheran Church as the first members of the corporation.
  • In 1991 St. Jacob Lutheran Church, Miamisburg and Peace Lutheran Church, Beavercreek became members.
  • Today 14 area Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations make up the school's governing Board of Trustees.

June 28, 1996 Name Change

  • As the school reached further into the Dayton metropolitan area, the school Board realized that a name change was necessary.
  • On June 28, 1996 the State of Ohio Department of Education approved our request to change our name from The Lutheran School of Dayton to The Lutheran School of Miami valley. This change more clearly reflected the geographic expansion of the student body and an increasing number of the area's supporting Lutheran congregations.

August 30, 1999 Classroom Expansion

  • Ground was broken in May of 1999 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 720 Burkhardt Avenue, to add additional classroom space.
  • A successful $1,000,000 capital campaign, "Shaping the Future," was also launched in May 1999.
  • On August 30, 1999 classes began in the new space. By Thanksgiving Day, 2000 we had reached our $1,000,000 goal and our new building was debt-free.

2001 - 2004 Core Knowledge Implementation

  • On August 21, 2001 the school began a three-year process to implement the nationally acclaimed Core Knowledge curriculum.
  • Core Knowledge is a solid, sequenced and shared core curriculum that helps children establish strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade. It emphasizes literacy in language arts, history, geography, math, science and the fine arts.
  • In October 2004 we were designated an official Core Knowledge school and Visitation Site by the Core Knowledge Foundation in Charlottesville, Virginia (www.coreknowledge.org)
